Potter Quotes #1

This weeks Potterthon on Lauren's Loquacious Literature/saz101 has me totally captured and as I already read the 4 chapters for this weeks readalong THRICE and still can't get enough I had the fabulous idea (haha) to post some  of my favorite quotes from these first few chapters - feel free to share yours!

Chapter 1 - The Boy Who Lived
'Mr and Mrs Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, where proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.' (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 1: The Boy Who Lived, Page 7)
'He'll be famous - a legend - I wouldn't be surprised if today was known as Harry Potter Day in future - there will be books written about Harry - every child in our world will know his name!' (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 1: The Boy Who Lived, Page 20)
I don't think that my choice about the first one actually has to be explained - which Potter Nut doesn't know this sentence by heart, after all it's how everything started. And everytime I reread this book I stop at the second quote and tell myself "Well, it's exactly like McGonagall predicted: There's not a child in this world who doesn't know his name, and we don't need to talk about writing books about Harry Potter, right?"

Chapter 2 - The Vanishing Glass
'But Uncle Vernone didn't believe him. No one ever did. The problem was, strange things often happened around Harry and it was just no use telling the Dursleys that he didn't make them happen.' (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 2: The Vanishing Glass, Page 31)
If I had the choice I would have written the whole second chapter, because I just love how it's written. Harry seems so innocent and childish (ok, I know he's eleven....) and he doesn't have a single clue about what or who he is - it's so adorable. In the end I chose this quote because it just sums up the relationship he has with the Dursleys - non-empathic and extremely unfulfilling.

Chapter 3 - The Letters From No One
'Harry picked it up and stared at it, his heart twanging like a giant elastic band. No one, ever, in his whole life, had written to him. Who would? He had no friends, no other relatives [...]. Yet here it was, a letter, adressed so plainly there could be no mistake:

Mr H. Potter
The Cupboard under the Stairs
4 Privet Drive
Little Whingin
Surrey'

(Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 3: The Letters From No One, Page 42)
There are no words for my longing for that letter when I finished primary school ... I think they didn't know that we were moving and couldn't get a hold of me scince, don't you... ?

Chapter 4 - The Keeper of the Keys
'Ah, go boil yer heads, both of yeh', said Hagrid. 'Harry, yer a wizard.' (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 4: The Keeper of the Keys, Page 60)
'Not a wizard, eh? Never made things happen when you was scared, or angry?'
Harry looked into the fire. Now that he came to think about it ... every odd thing that had ever made his aunt and uncle furious with him had happened when he, Harry, had been upset or angry [...] ... and the very last time Dudley had hit him, hadn't he got his revenge, whithout ever realising he was doing it? Hadn't he set a boa constrictor on him?' (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 4: The Keeper of the Keys, Page 67/68)
My first choice one of the MOST EPIC SCENES ever. You would remember that sentence you whole life, wouldn't you? About the second quote... I really like Harry being so ignorant about his "condition" and how he finally comes to accept the truth. In the next sentence Harry and Hagrid are positively beaming at each other and each time I read the novel I'm grinning along.

Ok, now my Potter need is satisfied..... for today at least.
One thing left though: Congratulations my fellow Slytherins for winning the House Cup on Pottermore today!! I'm SO full of House Pride right now!

  1. Wow, I love all these quotes! My original review was well over 3000 words because I just wanted to quote these huge slabs of text. I'm saving some of them for the Chapter Review posts (first one is out tomorrow)so I will still have a medium to do them justice.

I'm totally tweeting this post by the way. :)
